The Myth of Meta Tags
Meta tags are not a major factor in getting high search engine rankings.
There are only two meta tags that are useful for search engine optimization:
- Meta description
- Meta keywords
Meta Description Tag
The meta description tag should just be one or two sentences that describe your services. This short description should be written with your web site’s visitors in mind (becuase they may read it) and should contain a couple of your main keywords. The meta description should be different on each page, and should relate to the content of that page.
The reason for the meta description is not high search engine rankings as much as that it is sometimes used as a text snippet on the search engine results page. The meta description may be the first thing that your visitors see and you want it to grab their attention.
Meta Keywords Tag
The meta keywords tag should only contain about 10 to 15 keywords, and the keywords should relate to the content on the page. Stuffing keywords in your meta tags is a bad idea. Search engines know these tricks already, and they either ignore them or they can penalize you for them.
Meta Tags Will Not Get You High Rankings
Meta tags will not get you high rankings. Those two meta tags should be included on your web pages, but are weighted very low in the search engines’ formulas for ranking sites, especially with Google.
